I prefer them wrapped in bacon and grilled, then served with a carribean pineapple sauce...

No, no.

Firstly, you should always cook Gnoll thoroughly to eliminate the risk of catching something nasty. Gnoll flesh is worse than pork or monkey for it's ability to carry parasites and diseases that can infect other humanoids.

Secondly, Gnoll has a strong gamey flavour that many find unpleasant, so you need strong spices. Some Caribbean pineapple sauces may be enough, but there's little consistency among them.

Gnoll curry with hot green chili peppers would be my recommendation.

Seriously though, I chose the D&D Hyena-like "Demon worshipping, depraved cannibal savage."

Oh, and I like the "Hyena-Man" gnoll, though I don't restrict them to being a "Demon worshipping, depraved cannibal savage".

I've had some fun with "Survival of the Fittest" gnolls led by extremist druids.

That said, the notions of "a cross between a gnome and troll" or a rabid womble sound fun too.

I'd be game for them, though possible under different names.

Dunsany is somewhat vague on description except that they live in the woods and use spy holes in the trees, they also have a house full of emeralds.

I thought Dunsany's description was relatively clear.

Didn't they look something like upright pinecones with a pair of eyes like gems, that had ropelike tentacles for arms?

I like them to by hyena men, but I don't care weather their noble savages or demon worshiping cannibals. I might even enjoy a game where non-human species are not monolithic and there's room for both cultures.
