So is it fun?

No moreso than, say, playing Okami on my Wii, but in a different way.

It has its downsides in both playing and DMing, but overall, killing things and taking their stuff could only be not fun if they gave me an electric shock whenever I rolled a d20, and even then it might be worth it...

It has been terrific fun for my KotS group so far, which is a mixed group of those in both of my regular gaming groups. We've all had a blast with it. I think a couple of players have misgivings, but it's been fun for them too.

Maybe the better question would be, "did you have to make fun of 4e to have fun that session?" :D

Our group playtested the game earlier this year, and we did have fun. However, in my opinion the system did not add to the fun, but it didn't hamper it, either. We're going to be putting it through the real paces come July, but we could have as much fun with slightly tweaked 3e as we could with 4e, I'm willing to bet.
 

After being DM, I got to play for the first time last night. Sagiro was DM. At 5th level, we faced down a shambling mound, a bunch of vine horrors, and four stirges.

Oh my lord, stirges suck.

One stirge in particular decided my dragonborn warlord tasted utterly delicious. He successfully hit me for six rounds in a row. I missed him for five rounds in a row, being unable to roll double digits, but I successfully detached the stinkin' little blood-sucker every time. Then I got eaten by a shambling round while the stirge was still attached. I was only saved by Ashy, who leaped into the shambling mound (athletics vs Fort check) to dump a potion down my throat. I ended the fight down 3 or 4 healing surges, with 5 hit points, and with every power expended except my utility.

It was great.

The two rogues were cackling over on one side of the table, flanking and sneak atacking the same enemy and doing absurd amounts of damage between them. The tiefling warlord and I kept making snarky comments back and forth to one another. And the elven archer would have been much happier if the vines hadn't blinded her.

All in all, at a table with three brand new 4e players and 7 players total, everyone had a whole lot of fun. This makes me happy.
 

I've played a quick demo, and the first couple encounters of Keep on the Shadowfell, and had a great time. Even when my wizard whiffed a burning hands and missed all of the kobold minions he was trying to kill. :)
 

Maybe because it's new so everything is exciting to discover, maybe it's because I have a kick ass DM (you know who you are if you're reading this), but, yes, I have had fun in both 4e games I have played now (one was on game day at a game store and once with a group).

To me, it feels different than 3.X, but that's neither a good thing nor a bad thing for me - just different. I am just having fun.


Warning: First few combat encounters take a lot longer than expected since everyone is figuring out the new rules, characters, etc...
