So I've never Power gamed before.

I think it is time for his expectations to be subverted. Do note that if you Ranger, you can trade Track for Trapfinding using the Trap Expert ACF from... I believe Dungeonscape?

1. It's great all books are available. Which ones can YOU actually access? It'll help if we aren't recommending things you can't look up anyway.

2. What level do you think this game will run to? You're starting at 1, it takes a LOOOONG time to 20, and I've never seen a 1-20 game ever actually happen. Knowing roughly where you'll end is important in deciding what to play. You don't want to design around some prestige class you can't even enter till level 6 if the game's only going to level 6ish, for example, and you also wouldn't want a character decent starting out but with really poor options should the game zoom on to level 10 (or whatever) due to the build.

3. You said you already had a backstory and description. What are they? The build needs to be compatible. If he's a sharpshooting bowman, can't really build it as a Warlock (who make decent "magical archers"), for example.

Look into this feat:
Crossbow Sniper [PHBII Pg. 77] - Requires Crossbow Proficiency, Weapon Focus (crossbow), +1 BAB
You get ½ Dex to damage with the Crossbow you have Weapon Focus in. You also gain the ability to Skirmish and Sneak Attack at the range of 60'.

1: I have a pretty large selection, so changes are if you mention it, I can find it.

2: This game is going to be running for about 1 or 2 months, only playing 1 day every other week. Not really familiar enough with 3.5 to know how far that will get me.

3: In short; My character's father was a mighty Wizard in a world where arcane magic is feared, and them that use it are put to death. My father being no exception to this was burned at the stake while I was a young boy. Despite my mother constant warring to avoid magic at all cost, something in my blood refused to ignore it's power. In time I became a magic item smuggler, transporting magical goodies to place to place.

Your backstory sounds like Warlock to me... :)
Check them out in C.Arcane. You can take Eldritch Spear invocation to have a 250 ft ranged touch attack, and a few levels in, you become extremely proficient in Use Magic Device, so you can have all sorts of wands, scrolls, and gadgets to collect and utilize.

Only problem is you absolutely can't be "the rogue" with 2 + int skill points per level and none of the "rogue skills."

And it sounds like you won't get very far at all. I don't know how combat heavy your DM does things, but I've never seen advancement faster than once every 2 4-hour sessions, personally, and that was in games with LOTS of combat.

Actually I'm using a warlock right now and it's not that different from an archer rogue, closer to that than to a wizard anyway.

Eldritch blast tends to work similar to a bow using rogue, less attacks but easier to hit, around the same damage output.
You (can/should) get a good intimidate which replaces all talky skills :p
You can use shatter infinitly which replaces pick lock and disable device.
At higher lvl's you can fly, teleport and walk on walls and ceilings which is most of the breaking and entering skills.
Mostly you can't find traps which is a major point of most rogues but you know, with use magic device and a wand or two of summon monster 1 you can get a decent amount of celestial monkey's to do your bidding!

However. In a low magic setting where you can't use magic or be strung up as a heretic or burned as a witch... maybe warlock is pushing it. Or you could try explaining to the locals that spell-like abilities are not exactly the same as casting spells... XD
