It seems that the rumour is that an announcement by WotC was abruptly cancelled, and that the announcement was connected to 5e.

I can conceive of a credible scenario where this would happen, but I haven't got any inside information so it'd be just speculation.

Why would they do a new edition? The quality of their products have actually gone up in the last few months. They have asked more questions about how to improve their product than they have in my recent memory, 3rd or 4th edition. That's not the sign of someone trying to cut ties and run. That's the sign of someone trying to make it work.

Now does this mean that they're not planning 5th edition? If those folks are half as creative as I think they are how could they not be planning the next edition, if only for kicks and giggles?

I mean, think about it, what if this guy's writing those articles for fun? I design game systems for fun, why wouldn't he?

I think the real question is "At what level are they planning 5e?" . I don't think they have very much in the way of resources put towards it. There may have been meetings and discussion about the direction they should go, and I think these articles are all part of this. Is Mike just doing this a mere intellectual experiement end of story? I would say no.

I would say no.

Well if they didn't have ideas for the next edition what sort of designers would they be? On the level of "what if" I agree. But I doubt they have any serious plans in place beyond the ruminations of any normal creative person.

As for leaked 5e stuff, I haven't heard any news at all. I'd like to see a link myself...
