I used to be fairly good at German, took 3 years in high school and 4 more in college. However, severe lack of use has really hindered my abilities.

I can relate to that; my Latin abilities have varied wildly during the years, depending on use. Still, I have found that if you have had a good fluency in a language once, you usually find back easily enough after a little if you start using it again even after a few years.
