how is this different than chatting?

I think most people lurk because posting isn't fruitful if you're past the second the second page.
(anybody here an echo in here?)

or if the original thread was cool but a the first page is clogged up with stuff unrelated to what you had wanted to say.

That can happen, but most of the time the thread dies before the chatting happens.
 

Hell, I used to post here religiously under a different name (back when it actually was still Eric Noah's D&D page) but nowadays I don't post at all, really. Just much less to say. I guess that makes me a lurker.

Of course, this post is eight pages too late.
