So what ever happened to that guy who plagarized? (shadizar/Conan)

So, whatever happened to that writer for Mongoose that plagarized all that TSR material for the Conan: Shadizar map and design and sold it off as his own? What was his name? Did he get fined or did WotC ever go after him? Who would hire him now?

P.s. I'm still surprised that Mongoose never caught it..turning Shadizar the desert city into Venice, Italy...

If this is who I think it was, I believe that he died. He was terminally ill and unable to keep up with work, thus plagiarized to meet deadlines for numerous publishers, including Mongoose.

During that time, I recall someone mentioning that he wasn't able to keep up with deadlines, but no mention was ever made of illness.

This is going to sound cold, but I find it hard to justify that if you're dying that you should plagarize someone elses work in order to get it done.

Look up Persia and Egypt. Some of the greatest canals in the ancient world were built for desert cities. :) Including one that served the same purpose of the Suez Canal (though along a very different route). Filled in by the Greeks when they took Egypt.

This was discussed at length over on RPGnet's forums. Several different publishers posted pictures of what looked like traced maps submitted by the individual in question and the thread went downhill quickly as said individual posted in defense of his actions, subsequently being attacked by more than a few posters on the same grounds that you mention above. If the search function hadn't been disabled over there, I'd pull up a link for you.

You do make a good point for cities near large rivers and such.

..but that's probably not what R.E.H. had in mind when he designed the desert city devoid of such things..and I'm certain he didn't design the WotC map that the entire idea was plagarized from :)

I'm drawing a blank on the plagarizer's name..anyone remember? Or does this still fall on Mongoose's head for it happening in the first place?

He was a good person. He made a mistake. I did not realize he had passed on. R.I.P.

I wonder how one defends against something like known plagarism in a professional product?

I believe it is (was) Clayton Bunce. Here's a link to the RPGnet thread:

http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=174471

[Edit: Obviously, that's not the thread I was thinking of... that is a thread about Mr. Bunce and his plagiarism, but the more heated thread that I recall wherein Mr. Bunce replied to those accusations may have been pulled by RPGnet admin.]

Clayton Bunce is credited for cartography in Shadizar. I see nothing about him being ill or dying in industry news or in the announcements page of the company where he now works, so I think that you must be mistaken.
