So what ever happened to that guy who plagarized? (shadizar/Conan)

Clayton Bunce is credited for cartography in Shadizar. I see nothing about him being ill or dying in industry news or in the announcements page of the company where he now works, so I think that you must be mistaken.

It came up in a RPGnet thread (linked to above). I may be mistaken about Mr. Bunce's passing, but am not mistaken about terminal illness being used to excuse his actions (that much happened), as certain individuals (Ed Cha, Ian Barstow, etc) in the thread that I could find clearly assert. It's possible that Mr. Bunce was not ill, but he told several people that he was as the time.

Well, rumors of him being ill are in the linked thread as well

He was a good person. He made a mistake. I did not realize he had passed on. R.I.P.

I may have spoken too soon about that - I was told that he passed on recently, but that was an unconfirmed report (thus my initial statement that I believed he was dead). As far as him being ill, however, this was the reasoning used to justify his failure to meet deadlines and/or plagiarize the maps that he copied.

I haven't heard of Clayton passing on, but I have been out of contact with him for a while.

Whilst what he did was very wrong, Clayton was a good guy. He was ill, with heart problems. We were both working on a project together actually, but that never got finished.

During that time, I recall someone mentioning that he wasn't able to keep up with deadlines, but no mention was ever made of illness.

This is going to sound cold, but I find it hard to justify that if you're dying that you should plagarize someone elses work in order to get it done.

Then again, you've never been dying, have you?

Edit: Uh, I just wanted to note that I'm not trying to be offensive, since the above sounds kind of harsh.

And, really, I think that says about everything that needs to be said about the situation. A good summation.

You do make a good point for cities near large rivers and such.

..but that's probably not what R.E.H. had in mind when he designed the desert city devoid of such things..and I'm certain he didn't design the WotC map that the entire idea was plagarized from :)

I'm drawing a blank on the plagarizer's name..anyone remember? Or does this still fall on Mongoose's head for it happening in the first place?

The Egyptian canal passed through several otherwise dry cities. A good book to look for is The Ancient Engineers by L. Sprague deCamp. The Persians were known (if I recall properly) to use the canals to control some of the dry cities along their length - do what the King says or the water goes away...
