"So, what exactly is this D&D thing?"

I generally say something along the lines of "think a cross between Final Fantasy and free-form improv and you've got a decent idea." Then I go agead and describe the DM, the dice, and other basics.

Actually that differs from group to group :p

And I've never yet had anyone ask me that question ... probably the geek shame phenomen ... otoh if 75% of the people you speak with have a general idea and the others are jerks anyway ;)

You need to sit in on one of my game sometime. ;)

I tell them straight out what D&D is and the fact that I have played since I was a kid and I met my fiancee through Dungeons & Dragons. That usually kills any talk about 'nerds' and 'dateless' right there :D
