D&D 5E So what happened at GenCon with relation to 5th edition?

No wild guessing at all. Mike Mearls and Jeremy Crawford both said that in separate interviews at Gen Con this year.

I hadn't heard that they had said that. Interesting. Though it's kind of telling that all the D&D seminars at GenCon I've ever seen were scheduled in 50 person rooms.

Though, I have to agree with what DEFCON 1 says up above. People have better things to do than attend panels on "The Future of the Realms" at GenCon. They have games to get to.

This looks like a heck of a presence to me. This is the D&D area this year.

That was basically the point, yes. People at Gen Con are busy playing games. People at PAX play less games and so attend more seminars/panels.

Ok, well that makes sense then. If you schedule a seminar in a 50 person room then I guess you will only be able to get 50 people attending it.

The other thing to remember too, is that the Acquisitions Incorporated live games are HUGE. We're talking jam-packed Main Theater. So the attendees at PAX are in the mindset to watch at least one D&D-related event, so they might be more inclined to get in on a couple others over the weekend too.

If GenCon hosted the Penny Arcade guys or perhaps held a live Critical Role game, maybe more people would start thinking about D&D panels there as something they should be attending? No idea if it would work (or indeed if WotC even wants to spend the cash to fly the people out there), but it might be something.

They had this delve/event at PAX East. Looks pretty nice-so maybe they are moving this direction more than the Gencon direction.

"We ran Defiance in Phlan which is an introductory adventure for D&D Expeditions. It is set at Madame Freona’s Tea Kettle, a place in the Moonsea region of Phlan in the Forgotten Realms. Adventurers from all over the world meet at the tea house to find work. The booth was decorated with artwork by Robert Taylor depicting Madame Ferona and her daughters, as well as local adventuring heroes and their exploits. Doilies and tea cups decorated the tables and a hanging wooden sign out front, with a tea cup, let adventurers know they had arrived.
Once adventurers entered the Tea house, they could be swept away on any one of five different missions that the module presents. I chose Defiance in Phlan because it had a great theme, allowed us to run many short slots, providing more opportunities for players to play D&D throughout the weekend, and was a great introduction to D&D for new players. The module also allowed each DM to show a different play style approach with each mission, providing a lot of flexibility. We advertised that this event was beginner friendly and backed that up with an inviting decor, as well as an approachable, informative, and friendly staff."

Unfortunately, that delve event at PAX East (which I DMd for btw) was set up and run by 20 Sided Store from Brooklyn specifically *because* WotC no longer runs games at PAX East. They've done it the last two years in order to try and help fill the void for RPGs at the con. It's completely on their dime with no assistance from WotC. (They did provide some swag for the volunteer DMs two years ago, but nothing this year.)

The tabletop area has really taken a hit these past few years at PAX East.
