Just thought of a twist to the above.
The gnome is sought, he has the stone. He offers a trade. Why the PCs are seeking it are brought up, the gnome is surprised they want to grind it up. He'll grind it up for them if they want, as the item they get will be more expensive. PCs go get tradeable item and the gnome gives them ground up diamond dust.
What they don;t know is that the King's agent came and "bought" the diamond and the gnome, not wanting to get hurt either way subsituted the 1 daimond for several to get the dust.
The heroes will try the spell that they need the dust for...it fails...now they have to go back where an apologetic gnome tells them what really happened! Now they can follow the gnome's other leads or go seek out that king.
