So, what's on Cocytus, anyway?

I've got a group that, for various reasons, find themselves on Cocytus, the second layer of Pandemonium. They're looking for a way to Phlegethon, the third layer (specifically, the town of Windglum). Taking a look at the sources, there ain't a whole lot on this layer -- Howler's Crag, the Harmonica, but little civilization (which makes sense). Question is, then, where might a conduit to the next layer be? And how will they find out about it (they didn't exactly think this through...hehe)?

So, who's here, contact-wise? Who can they talk to who might know how to get down? What kind of portals could they find? Gimmie some ideas on weirdies who lurk in the caverns of Cocytus. And how my impetuous party could find them....:)

In Dead Gods, there was a creature who's name I forget, that can "absorb" you and let you sink into the 3rd layer, for a price.

This adventure also used the Cynosure, a sort of traveling carnival to help give the pcs a way to negotiate this plane.

As written, though, there really isn't much else that I'm aware of. Like many planes, there is a lot of need for more elements to flush them out.

Sounds like a great place for a psycopathic bard/prophet type who views the holes and the wind as a massive wind instrument creating music on an epic scale. And one of the holes would just coincidentally blow victims out on another layer, if he "plays" it right.

Of course, he might just decide to torture them to death, using their screams for inspiration instead ...

(I like my lower planes to be Evil.)

I like that idea, Whizbang. I'm a huge fan of mad bards and this is a good place for 'em. Thanks. :)

Anybody got other ideas? I'll be writing up the scenario tonight, so gimmie your mad, your cruel, your Banished masses yearning to be free...

One of the players is playing an Unseelie faiy warlock. Any ideas involving the Queen of Air and Darkness? Another is punished by Loki -- what good trickster god stuff could he pull?

Chaos, chaos, chaos.

I don't know much about pandemonium except that it is supposed to be iconic CN so slaad suggest themselves, or perhaps the Galchutt from chaositec.

Aeons ago, I wrote up a few different cities for the Planescape community. One of which was a burg in Pandemonium called Anonymous, a place where bashers go to lose their identities and hide. If you want to check it out, the info is here:

Be warned though, the web design is horrible. Hopefully the text within isn't as bad.

Cool ideas, good writing- enjoyable read Ruined. Thanks.

I've had far too much fun in Pandemonium in my games (and the next major plot arc in my SH will take place at Howler's Crag). I'll add my own ideas for the plane here later on this evening when I get the chance.

Screaming wind + pitch darkness + something lurking out there = fun

That is Limbo. Limbo is where slaad live. Pandemonium is on the chaotic side of the Great Wheel between Limbo and the Abyss.

That said, Phlegethon is a great place to decide the galchutt are imprisoned in as well as random stashes of chaositech that have been lurking there since the forgotten dawn of time.

That town's giving me some inspiration, Ruined, thanks! And Shemmy, give me something concrete! I know it's in your lothy nature, but yer such a tease! ;)

I'm kind of steering myself to involving the river Styx because the party is about 6th level, and there's a host of CR5-ish aquatic fey that I can make Debased (template from ToH2 that represents Unseelie) as some sort of physical challenge. The bard is a good tricky challenge....now something mental, something spiritual....
