So, where is the GSL?!

Dont get me wrong, I'm glad 4E will allow 3P support (I'm not saying "4E is open" anymore). But I really think people will look back at this 4E launch and scratch their heads and wonder what the heck was Wizards thinking. Those who arent doing that already.

Reading what I am about to say, I know it sounds snarky, but I really am asking a genuine question: who isn't already scratching their head about something with the 4E roll out? Be it the DDI, the cancelling of the mags, how the PHB feels "incomplete", the trashing (I mean overhaul) of the most popular setting, the license, the lack of communication with publishers and fans, and on and on, there's no shortage of things to scratch your head about.

So early this week is out. That leaves tomorrow because Fridays are out. They won't want to release it next week because they will be too busy getting ready for Origins. The week after that is Origins. They will then be getting caught up the following week compounded by the fact that it is a short week because of July 4th. So I figure if it isn't tomorrow it will be July 7th.

I don't know. Are they actually going to release the GSL? I mean, sure, they keep saying they will, but then they don't.

If they'd announced at the beginning that they weren't going to allow third party products, all the third parties right now would be deep into their plans to continue support for 3e under the OGL, and there would be 3e product developed after last year's GenCon that would be coming out right now. If you wanted to minimize competition from 3e for 4e, well, what better than a GSL that will never see the light of day?

And, if you're a really Machiavellian exec, you don't even tell the people working on the GSL that it's a fake. You have them actually and genuinely work on it, so they can reassure outsiders that it is real. Then you just throw up roadblocks, and, eventually, announce that you've decided to cancel the GSL in favor of a different licensing approach. Which then never materializes, either.

No shortage indeed. Sigh. Well put.

The irony in this is that this is exactly what they said would change with 4e and the new direction....

Looks like business as usual to me...

I honestly don't think so.

Whether it's due to incompetence or malice I don't know, but I really don't think there will be a GSL.

I feel like I'm back in the eighties again. Who will be the new Mayfair Games?

If they find out that their business plan expectations can be really optimistic without any GSL -prior to next edition- I guess that they won't release it for 4e. But eventually, at some point, some time I believe that they will release something for D&D as soon as they get to know that they need it. Personally, I really do not care, if not for feeling for those that have been investing to be financially dependent to this. But I guess there is enough flexibility in the rpg market for them to move and achieve something.

Maybe they'll start previewing it like they do the minis....

One clause each week until the full license is revealed at Gen Con.

Or you could buy the Pirate's Guide to Freeport, which is a systemless setting book, and use it as the basis of a 4E campaign right now.

I never realized it was systemless. Bought it now for my 4e campaign. Thanks for the heads up.
