Soloing the World's Largest Dungeon

Never, maxing out the PC is not what either of us wants or would enjoy. WE are taking a higher level character though one that is weak for her level through it.

I think an akashic is a good way to go, can use wands to heal, can beef up to be a decent fighter, plenty of skills, good armor and weapons...probably a solid choice.

Definately pick up leadership, get a cleric cohort.

Since she's doing it solo, she should level fast as hell, so make sure to level her appropriately.

My players aren't halfway out of section A and I have already had two TPKs (one was virtual). I don't see how it would be possible to solo unless you started the character higher than they are supposed to start.

A 5th level character (a cleric or paladin most likely) could do okay.

I am running the WLD for my wife, and we're having a blast. I decided to let her play two gestalt characters, as without me constantly fudging rolls, I just could not see how one character could survive (I'm trying not to change any of the encounters).

So she's running a cleric1/sorcerer1 and a barbarian1/rogue1. We're not quite through region A yet, and she seems to be doing well, with plenty of close calls. I have a possible gestalt NPC in mind to introduce to the party later if the need arises.

I think one of the biggest problems we're seeing, even with gestalt characters, she has more options, but less actions per round to use the options (2 characters instead of a typically larger party). It is also easier for her characters to get surrounded and flanked.

Assuming there is at least one trap or locked enclosure in the joint, a rogue is essential. It's the best solo class around, especially with UMD offering it the option to use scrolls and wands.

Multi-class rogue with fighter and cleric, and you should be able to handle about anything.

A 5th level ANYTHING is going to have a SEVERLY hard time by themselves in room A80.

It would go something like this...

Player: I walk into the room.
GM: OK, you aren't suprised because you heard flapping noises. Roll initiative.
Player: 28!
GM: OK, great. You see a hoard of batlike things flapping around. Look alot like the stirges that have been attacking you.
Player: I attack/fireball/shoot/whatever some.
GM: OK, you killed 5 of them...now you get an AoO as they fly in to attack you.
Player: *kills another stirge*
GM: *rolls 16 touch attacks as the stirges swarm the unfortunate character*
Player: *grapples a stirge off him/herself*
GM: OK, the 7 stirges that grappled you drain *rolls* 17 CON. Oh, and the others attack.
Player: Head for the chopper!!!!

Any way you slice it....22 stirges is rough...for any solo creature.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but if you are going to just start a higher level then that pretty much invalidates the question. I am pretty sure that if you ran Orcus through the adventure he would not only survive, but end up having half the dungeon as his personal army on the way out. At some point, no matter how far advanced you start as, you are going to end up in a section that is above your head and was designed for a party, not an individual.

Let me know how it goes, though.
