Soneillon. Part 1 (Updated 6/15)

Oh my. Three Dukes. I wonder is this part of Shomei's doing or are things quickly spiralling out of control for our protagonists?

Spiraling out of control is probably correct. In my mind, it is actually more likely the devils will choose to indirectly aid our heroes than hinder them. A Paladin favored by Orothon is a charming bauble to bag, but Graz'zt is in quite another league. Bringing down both would be the "best", but one must keep priorites straight.

Woah - it makes my brain hurt to try and keep track of all the names and the hierarchy of the Abyss, much less all the plots and intrigues therein!

My compliments to you, sir, at your mental prowess!

And frankly, it was both astonishing and strangely gratifying to actually see Ortwin strike out for once! :D

(is it bad if I was about to type Nolin instead of Ortwin? :p)

Very juicy, Sep! In particular:

Later, it would get very messy.

Also, a DMing question: you have obviously spent a good amount of time detailing your infernal hierachies (Infernal, Abyssal, Sladdic, independants like Feezu, Demogorgon, etc.). Had you prepared in detail several of Shomei's different window realms, knowing that the PCs could choose any of them; or did they choose Afqithan, and then you winged the encounters there and created the surrounding Abyssal politics on the spur-of-the-moment?

Was that clear? Basically, a) I'm trying to understand your DMing style [where you fall on the wing-it vs. plan-it axes], and b) I'm trying to get a sense of how much background "ephemera" you have created for your lower planes (just what you need for play, or play details plus some sketch environs/surrounding contextual details that you round out as the directions/possibilities open [much like the original Q1 worlds for example], or a lot of detailed prep before play such that you can instantly throw Lehurze and Soneillon into the picture without any winging-it-like issues because you've already created and detailed them, their schemes and relations to the Loquai and Graz'zt, etc., etc.).

Ok, my head hurts a lot now.

And to second what Grodog said - Sep, I'd love to read any notes or ramblings about DMing you'd care to post. I've learned a few tricks just from your story already, but more insight is always good.

A very good update.

I suspect that the devils have arrived for their own purposes, as Ridley's Cohort has mentioned. Of course, the help may be designed to draw Eadric closer to Titivilius. (Devils of such stature probably have at least three reasons for doing anything.)

Irknaan gave a cursory nod. Thirteen devils – even ten knights and three Dukes of Hell – were no particular threat to him in his own fortress, but he was nonetheless cautious.

I have to admit, I underestimated Irknaan. 3 Dukes of hell... and he feels safe to let them wait? Oh my....

That was my first thoughts...if he feels secure letting 3 Dukes of Hell wait on him along with their 10 "knights", however are our favorite heroes supposed to survive this one? I hope Ortwin has more success at getting "public" support later than he's had up till now...sounds like they're going to need it!
