Songs for your Characters

I once had a player who's Bard only knew one song....

There's a Dragon who knows
All that glitters is gold
And he's buying...

Never made it much beyond that point. Hard to sing and dodge dice.

I had a player who kept on using music and musicians to influence his characters.

One of his characters was named Memphis Heartbreaker, a bard made in the image and sound of Elvis. Of course, he used the appropriate accent, used his lyrics and song titles in his dialogue and proceeded to rock our campaign.

Another of his characters was a gnome by the name of:

CantgetenoughofyourlovebabybyBarryWhite.

Same as above.

Was short, rotund and had a deep voice.

"Oh yeah..."

My fave was a character that used the Shaft song.

His name was Mine Shaft, a cleric of the "Soul-forga".

"Shut your mouth!

I was only talking about Mine Shaft!"

In my group, we frequently associate a song to a character after we've played that character for a few sessions and gotten to "know" him or her.

Right now, my favorite character is a Rashemi berserker named Vladislak Dyernina.

My love for you is like a truck, Berserker!

For a high-level monk I once had:

Everybody was Kung Fu fighting!
those kicks were fast as lightning!
In fact it was a little bit frightening,
but they fought with expert timing!

Sorry. :D

I've never associated songs with any of my characters, D&D, Champions or otherwise. Closest we've come to that in any of my games were:

-- a cavalier with a magical "amulet of accompaniment" that would play stirring music whenever he went into combat; usually had no effect on the outcome, he just liked it.

-- a bard with a magical instrument who could create semi-random effects by playing "appropraite" real-world songs (a la Alan Dean Foster's "Spellsinger" series)

If I were going to associate a "hero" song with one of my characters, it would most likely be "Holding Out for a Hero" (written by Jim Steinman) or "Honest Men" (ELO Part II).

Oh, and I do associate "Lightning's Hand" (Kansas) with Storm of the X-Men, but I've never played her as a character, so that doesn't count. :)
