Sonic subtitution feat?

Whimsical

Explorer
An incantrix/wizard player is looking to add the feat that allows you to subtitute the energy damage of a spell to sonic for +1 spell level. He and I swear that we have seen this feat somewhere before, but we can't find it.

It is in a 3.5 D&D WotC book? If it is, what is the book, and what is the name of the feat?

Is is instead in a 3.5 d20/OGL book? What & where?

Should I stop taking the info that I read while I'm asleep as fact? Perhaps I should stop staring into my own Hypnotic Pattern spell; repeated extended viewings seem to be unravelling my mind. :)

Help?

As discussed in a previous thread, in 3.5 you have two sources for Energy Substitution.
  1. Complete Arcane - you cannot use energy substitution (sonic).
  2. Deities & Demigods, 3.0 upgraded to 3.5 with the upgrade booklet - you can use energy substitution (sonic).
Take your pick. :)

I believe the feat you're looking for is called Energy Substitution. It's in Tome and Blood, p. 40. Basically when you take this feat you choose a type of energy like sonic for example, and you can then modify damage causing spells of any sort to do sonic damage instead of their normal type. So, a Fireball spell this feat has been applied to would cause sonic damage instead. The great thing about this feat is it doesn't raise the level of any spell it's applied to :) .

Sonic was deliberately removed from Energy Substitution, when the feat was updated to 3.5 (Complete Arcane has the current version, based on the MiniHB's Energy Affinity - the 3.0 Energy Substution allowed a change to sonic energy).

The only (?) option is to pick up a level of Archmage.

Did y'all hear something? ;)

How about a HR feat:

Exotic Energy Substitution (Metamagic)
Prerequisites: Energy Substitution, Caster Level 10th

The PC who takes this feat may substitute another damage type for the energy type listed in a spell that does damage. The PC with this feat must choose a particular exotic energy type to use as a substitute for the spell's normal energy type, and once chosen, this selection cannot change. Exotic subtitute damage types include: Earth, Sonic, Force, Holy, Unholy, Lawful, Chaotic, Positve Energy, Negative Energy or Other (any other type of exotic or unusual damage type that the DM approves for his campaign).

A spell modified by Exotic Energy Substitution uses a spell slot 3 levels higher than its actual level.

This Feat may only be taken once.

Positive energy... So from now on high level wizards will be casting healing fireballs?

Sonic isn't worth a +3 spell level... AT MOST +2...
