Sony aims for comeback win with PS3

Unless the PS3 gains ground on the 360 and Wii this holiday season (which seems pretty much impossible, and completely out of line with the trends from January to October of this year), it's dead. There's just not enough time for them to come back before the third-gen Xbox and Nintendo's crack at an HD system come out.

I think their prospects are pretty decent long term, because developer support in Japan seems to be increasing. Sales of PS3 games aren't great in Japan, but seem to be picking up. And once Gran Turismo 5 hits...

However, I think they goofed by not including BC in their 40 gig model. That was the main factor in me going with the 360 (along with Mass Effect)

Next gen XBox and Nintendo? Um, the Wii just came out... last year. The 360 isn't much older. Sony has plenty of time to turn things around. In fact, they already have. The PS3 is a great buy, even without something like backwards compatibility. The system's Blue Ray player is one of the highest consumer rated devices on the market and costs the same as one, and on top of that you get a pretty awesome game system.

The major advantage the XBox has is games, and while the PS3 may never dominate the market as its predecessor did, it is gaining ground and still has plenty of time. I'm not usually one to stand on a soap box, and certainly not for Sony, but saying it won't pick up enough steam before the next Next Gen systems seems a bit ludicrous to me.

The problem is timing. It seems pretty nearly impossible for the PS3 to catch the Wii, even in Japan, in less than two years. Or to catch the Wii and 360 everywhere else in less than two years. And at that point, the next generation of consoles is no more than two years out. Probably less than that, given that the Wii was technically unimpressive and a 'Wii HD' update to 360/PS3 level graphics capabilities could probably be done in a profitable $250 console no later than next year, and that MS replaced the original Xbox after only 4 years.

It's still early. It is not - however - the first inning. We at the top of the fifth.

The problem, for Sony, is that the 360 is now a mature system and the 360 in now in its prime with no real competition. It has more games - and vastly more good games - than any other system on the market right now.

Why is the Wii selling well? Cheaper price point - no other reason. But it is the games sales which matter. That's where the money is - not the consoles. The consoles are a loss leader to get a customer on the road to buying the games.

And right now - the games that are selling best overall right now are the 360's, not the Wii's.

Can that change by next Xmas? Does PS3 have a chance to close that gap?

Sure they do. It ain't over till it's over.

Will the PS3 close that gap and make this more of a competition it? "Probably not". But that's a far cry from "no".

Halfway through with the PS3 only being out for a year? No way. It's closer to the 3rd inning at this point. We won't be able to judge the 360 vs the PS3 for at least 2-3 more years. Too much is changing in the industry to really know right now.

Is that true for Nintendo though? It's my understanding that they *make* money on hardware sales, in significant quantities.
