Soon to be 5th lvl Sorcerer seeks spell help

For versatility, I'd go with Alter Self. A mini Fly and Water Breathing in one. For 3rd level spell, I'd grab Dispel Magic, before anything else.

The problem of being berated by a paladin is a no problem. His job is to take the heat. Your job is to sit in the back row and look cool.

Featwise, I'd start considering Spell Penetration, or a Metamagic feat, OR the best choice: Extra Spell (which at 6th level would give you an extra 2nd level spell, if your DM allows this feat).

My vote goes for Haste and Fly. With Haste the AC bonus alone is worth the price of admission. It might even convince your rogue to get in closer!

Fly is a great general utility spell. It gives you height, mobility, pit trap avoidance and helps you ignore castle walls and other inconveniences.

Both of these spells will ensure that within a very short time, you will be the paladin's best friend. Trust me. Hit him with Haste once, and he'll be addicted and never want you to leave his side.
