Sorcerer/Bard spell swapping and prestige class prerequisites

IanB

First Post
So, a sorcerer in the game I run has the elemental savant prestige class. Among the requirements is a summoning spell.

He wants to swap it out using the new sorcerer swapping (we're getting a little head start on converting some stuff even though we won't be playing again until the books come out.)

My inclination is to say that if you lose the prerequisites for a prestige class, you can't use the abilities any more until such time as you qualify again, like feats.

Any rules to back up/disprove this assertion?

Hmmm. Not really, except the one you just mentioned - the feat ruling.

I wholly agree with you nonetheless though.

well since spell swapping didn't exist before I can't point to a precise ruling, but the basic ideas of pre-reqs for both prestige classes and feats si that when you don't meat them you no longer have access to their benies. Not sure if its expressly pointed out at the begining of the prestige class seciton of the dmg, but I'm fairly certain its metioned for feats, and the logical extension can then be made.

No help I know but oh well.

Contrarily, I recalled that the rules were different between feats and classes for that; if you lose a feat pre-req, you can't use the feat till you get it back, but you won't lose a class ability if you no longer qualify. Anyone have the DMG for clarification?

DMG pg 27:

Should a character find herself in a position ... where she no longer meets the requirements of a prestige class, she loses all special abiliites (but not HD, BAB, or base save bonus) gained from levels of the prestige class.

My judgment: lose the spell and lose the prestige class abilities. Spell swapping shouldn't be abused to allow qualification for a class and then switched to a "more useful" spell.
