sorcerer/dragondisciple/psion

First Post
Yesterday I was talking with a friend of mine about our characters in our present campaings, and he told me that he's playing a character that is sorcerer/dragondisciple/psion
My question is is that a weird combination or is it a good one and possible?
it just sounded interesting

a delayed casting class with cha as a casting stat, a mostly fighting class with no real caster advancement, and a manifesting class with an int primary stat.

Low hd, very low bab, no casting power, horrible MAD...

Maybe a weird combination of a few prcs might make it passable.. but wow.. talk about fighting the game all the way.

Generally, it's not a good idea to multiclass two spellcasters unless you're going for a PrC that gains you spells for both (i.e. Mystic Theurge). But, I think there's a PrC for a wizard or sorceror/psion multiclass called a Cerebromancer. It might be in the expanded Psionics book for 3.5. At least with that he'd be getting a boost to both spellcasting classes, while also getting some boosts in physical stats. Though it would take quite a few levels to make it worthwhile.

So if he started off with really poor strength/mediocre con and put most of his points into int/cha/dex, it might work. Don't recall off hand exactly what stats DDs get boosted and when, but I seem to remember a lot of strength, some con, and a little int.

Either way, he's probably best off ditching DD and picking up Cerebromancer.

If the character was primarily melee with 1-2 levels of sorceror and only wanted a 1-2 levels of psion you can get a character with a lot of flexibility. Having a large number of minor effects can be lifesavers or provide a decent augmentation.

No, the character won't really be out in front at any given time but they will have plenty to contribute.

Either way, he's probably best off ditching DD and picking up Cerebromancer.
What do you mean by ditching? he can get rid of the DD prestige class?
So, it's not a bad character, DD gets ability boosts at 2, 4, 7 and 9 levels, Str, Int, Cons
If he manages to balance all ability points he may be usefull after all.

With that sort of build to me it looks like the absolute best he can do is something like this:

Psion1/Sorc4/Dragon Disciple 10

This is a 15th level character, so he should be very powerful. Now lets look over what he has.

Assuming a starting point buy of 30 (I dont have any idea what you use) the character might be something like this:

Str 14 +8 (class) +3 (level) = 25
Dex 10 = 10
Con 14 +2 (class) = 16
Int 14 +2 (class) = 16
Wis 12 = 12
Cha 14 +2 (class) = 16

HD: 5d4+10d12 +45 (avg 124)
BAB: +9
Full attack: +16/+11
Skill points: 4*(2+int) psion list, 4*(2+int) sorc list, 10*(2+int) dragon disciple list
Saves: F: +11 =+3 (stat) +8 (base), R: +4 =+4 (base), W: +14 =+1 (stat) +13 (base)
Spells: As a 4th level sorc + 7 extra 2nd level spells per day (known:6/3/1, PerDay:6/7/11, DC 10+3+level)
Powers: As a 1st level psion of whatever discipline (3 1st level powers known, 3pp, DC 10+3+level)
Special: 4th level familiar, bonus feat from first level of psion, +4 natural armor, breath weapon 1/day, low light vision, 60' darkvision, immunity to sleep and paralysis, immunity to energy type of breath weapon, claw/claw/bite routine, blindsense, wings

This is the absolute best that he is. Before that last level of dragon disciple he is missing out on quite a bit of this and every level of something after this will have to be a beginning level from some other class or a very marginal boost to one of the two other classes that he has.

He is still missing his 3rd attack (and will be for 2 more BAB) and his attack bonus is 'very' low for a primary fighter.

His casting ability is almost nil, essentially it will only be for utility work or slight bonuses that can be dispelled very easily.

He does however have some interesting options here and there and if he starts off as a human then all of the later abilities are all gain.

Likely it could be a very enjoyable character, but it is 'very' far from being a powerhouse. Looks to be a bit under par overall to me. And this is when he is at his absolute maximum potential (barring some really cool prc after this.. such as warmind..mmm..)

MMMM, although he would have more dex cons and int, cause at the time he has Dex=18, Con= 16 and int=16
He's an air genasi.
It sounds cool, maybe he should use it wisely in combat and in the end it may be owrth combining those classes.

air gensi = +1 LA, another hit to caster and special abilities, Ack.
Im not sure I would be comfortable with a character who dabbled in 2 different types of energy, then chucked it all to become a dragon - now if he made a gem dragon disciple that added psionic powers instead of sorcerey - that I could really get behind.
So mechanically its weak, what kind of story does he have?

Oddly enough, dragon disciple is a pretty bad caster class.
Im a big fan (my current highest lvl character) of Fighter / Sorc / D.D.

Lots of HP, decent BAB, lots of Str., and a smidge of casting.

But as long as hes havin fun :D
