D&D 5E Sorcerer level up idea

Question for the hive mind!?
I have been thinking about and optional rule for sorcerers and possibly bards, to enhance the RP of their chosen spells.
Instead of having the player chose their spells when they level up you let them choose their new spell(s) when they need it. In my mind it works like this: A sorcerer has a natural connection to the lay lines of magic and when they are stressed they manipulate those lines for the desired effect, possibly not really knowing how they are doing it just that they Need to do it. The strain on their body is immense and they can only do it so often (twice per level up). Yes, this allows for a sorcerer to save a spell for a very specific situation (kind of feels like meta gaming but also it feels like good RP if done correctly)

let me know your thoughts please

I'd want to avoid "one second, I need to examine the complete spell list to see if there is a solution to this problem".

This already exists when clerics or druids or paladins get a long rest, but at least then it isn't in the middle of the action.

That is very true unless the player is very knowledgeable it could shunt the flow to the situation. I had not thought of that. Thanks!

Yeah, this could be fun for an experienced table/player. It would be a nice RP element to a game

I like the concept of sorcerers learning spells at need rather than just “whelp, this is next spell on theme” or “well, this is the most optimal choice for this level spell”

It might work best with a a Wild Magic sorcerer or if all sorcerers are wild magic in a setting.

Years ago when we played with training rules we gave some of the things when the PC had enough XP, but had not trained yet. You could gain HP and some little things, but not others until you trained. Sorcerers could gain some of this to separate them from mages.

Do you mean anything like the spellpool by the prestige class "mage of the Arcane Order" from "the complete arcane"? Or crafting talisman, single-use magic item created in the sorcerer's sanctum.
