Sorcerers with Recharge Magic

Would giving sorcerers recharge magic (from UA) in lieu of a familiar and the ability to swap out their spells make the class a variant of the warlock?

While each person will have there own opinion on the spell charge but this is my experience with it:

In one Camapign the DM was crazy for Monte Cook, so when UA came out he added the spell charge to the game. In that session the role playing had given us all our clues to know what we needed to know and the fight was ready to begin. This was the structure of our party:

Druid (Me)
Sorc
Bard (DM/NPC)
Monk
Halfling Barbarian

We where all at third level fighting a bunch of cultist (Sorcs) and a Evil Cleric Vampire (Boss) It was 10 vs us. After 2 rounds the sorc, the cleric and my druid twiddled there thumbs while waiting for the spells to rechage. 4 rounds later we casted a couple more spells and had to wait 5 rounds before being able to do anything again.

Thanks to the Monk the Barb and my animal companion, where where able to clear the spell caster mand make the cleric flee.

While the Spell Charge may give you more spells a day, in combat it makes spell caster absolutely useless. Unless thumb twiddling is counted as being useful in battle.
