Sound Burst: What does this deafened do?

Leopold

NKL4LYFE
I have a PC Cleric who constantly blasts my critters with this spell. Recently he came across some spell casters who passed their will save but still were deafened.

My questions are thus:

1. IF you save are you still deafened?

2. What does deafened do?

3. How long would the deafened ability last?

here is the spell:

Sound Burst

Evocation [Sonic]
Level: Brd 2, Clr 2
Components: V, S, F/DF
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Area: 10-ft.-radius spread
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will partial
Spell Resistance: Yes

The character blasts an area with a tremendous cacophony. Creatures in the area take 1d8 points of sonic damage and must succeed at Will saves to avoid being stunned for 1 round. A stunned creature can’t act and loses any Dexterity bonus to AC. Attackers gain +2 bonuses to attack it.

Deafened creatures are not stunned but are still damaged.

Sound Burst doesn't actually deafen anyone; the last line is ther to say that deaf creatures cannot be stunned by Sound Burst.

As for what deafened does, the creature cannot hear (obviously), suffers a -4 to initiative, has a 20% chnce of spell failure when casting a spell with a verbal component, and cannot make listen checks. There is no set time for long a character is deafened; it depends on the effect that deafens him or her.

since sound burst causes deafening how long does it last? 1 round or longer? Anyone know where i can find info on this?

Also what types of creatures are immune to this deafening ability. Oozes, slimes, undead, giants, elementals, etc?

This is a joke, right?

That is why I thought he were joking!

All it says is that creatures that are deafened are immune to the stunning effect but not the damage.

...And the reason that is spelled out explicitly is that the default assumption is that a sonic attack fully affects a deaf creature. Sound Burst "mostly" affects already deaf creatrues.

Just thought I would make that crystal clear.

Yeppers- I had to reread the post myself. :) But you guys are correct. Sound burst doesn't deafen anybody. It deals sonic damage and stuns any creature in the area that fails its save. Creatures that are deafened (meaning already deafened or can't hear at all) just take sonic damage and dont suffer the stunning effects of the spell.

but as far as the after affects where the enemy is deafened even if they fail their save. It says so in the text.

what i want to know is how long this deafened after affects last.

NEVERMIND..i get it now..there IS NO deafened after shocks. Only if you lack ears does it say you are not affected by the stunner.

NOW I UNDERSTAND!!!!

:D Right. No ears or if you are deaf (say you have been affected by a deafness spell or something)...then you are not stunned.
