He is usually pretty sharp in finding relevant and recent updates on stories.

Indeed, its my home page...He's also good at catching local and international publications, gets some unique scoops, and has one of the most comprehensive lists of links to columnists and publications on the web.

It looks like the shuttle was damaged durng liftoff. This damage resulted in this tradgedy ...

I will say it again, because I feel it is important:

We do not know what caused the loss of the shuttle. We should not take the first easy, simple explanation that comes along, and take it as truth.

Yes, some debris came off the external tank and struck the left wing of the craft. Yes, they did report that some sensors on the left wing cut off shortly before they lost contact with Columbia. but correlation does not imply causation.

They'd had a similar debris incident two launches ago, and the damage it caused was no safety risk whatsoever. They've had sensors die before. And, we can also note that the debris apparently hit forward on the wing, while the first sensors to die were on the back of the wing. In all, we cannot tell - it may be that neither of these are connected with the destruction of the shuttle.

I harp on this for one simple reason - when you present people with "information" they make up their minds. Even if that information is later proven false, they tend to stick by their original decision. Speculation on the cause will have people making up their minds about what should be done. And public opinion does have an impact on NASA.

So, we want people making up their minds based upon the truth. We don't want their minds made up based upon unfounded speculation mere hours after the tragedy. Let the people do their jobs and find the truth.

I'd use a long spoon on the Drudge Report. He's like the New York Post.

I do agree that it's a good idea not to decide what the cause was yet--but it is reassuring that NASA has some idea of what MIGHT have been the cause, if only to quiet the terrorism rumors somewhat.

Greetings!

I am continuously sad over the disaster, and proud at the same time. These brave men and women, white, black, Indian, all were accomplished, highly talented professionals. Six of the seven astronouts were married, and have children, many of whom are teenagers. They served with honour, dedication, and courage. Their work--routinely beckons the hand of death. They truly are fine heroes all, and I pray that we shall honour them, and that God shall bless them with glory and beautiful rest.

Semper Fidelis,

SHARK

:(

My sympathies and condoleances for all the crew and their families.

That is sorrowful. It's not only about the death of seven excellent persons, or the huge material cost of the disaster. It's also a severe wound to humanity's only worthy dream, space discovery.

Yesterday, my mother was watching a film on the TV, when the news break out and was announced by a scrolling line of text. That happened just at the time the heroin lost her daughter and cried in horror. That coincidence was feeling eerie...
