One of the main, often-cited issues with gnomes having illusionist as a favored class was the fact that an illusionist is merely a specialized wizard. This was rectified (some say ruined) with the change in 3.5: bards are now the favored class for gnomes.
Having sold this as a great step forward, why would WoTC then turn around and make a new race with Transmuter as its favored class?
What's the deal here? And are there other races with specialist wizards as their favored classes?
