Speculating about Rumors

First Post
I've noticed something ever since 4e was announced that bothers me.

We're getting into arguments over speculations about a product that's not even to the printers yet.

Decent, rational people are getting snide and angry to each other over tidbits that drop from Designer's blogs and forum posts that may or may not actually bear out into any resemblance of fact. We should not be this invested in rumors. I'm reminded of when I was a kid, speculating over what I might get for Christmas, in July. It's just all wishful thinking or fear mongering.

Until the final product is in the printer's hands, nothing is set in stone. NOTHING. Not even the things that the designers say is set in stone. Until there's ink, it's just electrons.

So let's all take a nice deep breath, calm ourselves and not get worked up over what MAY happen in a year. It's not constructive and it doesn't make for good forum neighbors.

And most of all, it's just not fun. And above all else, D&D in whatever iteration it takes, is fun.

1) Internet. People can be snide and angry over your soft drink preferences.

2) People like to speculate and gossip. For some, that's fun. ENworld, after all, was born just before 3e come out, to collect all the nuggets about 3e. There was energy there, as is there now.

3) It's really hard to talk about 4e if we can't speculate and discuss what's been produced. There's a lot of energy and anxiousness, both positive and negative. We have 8 months. We can't just sit on our hands that long.

D&D in whatever iteration it takes, is fun.

But what kind of fun? I've seen people post that those of us who refuse to say 3.5 is now utter crap due to the advent of 4E are having WrongBadFun.

I don't know what threads you are talking about. And by "let's" I'm sure you meant other people. The threads I participate in often discuss hypothetical things. For example, it doesn't matter whether or not 4E will include Smurfs as a player race - discussing whether or not this would be a good idea is the point in many cases. I'm not defending the rudeness, but people don't always read things the same way. For example, to me, making assumptions about someone's mental state is rude and uneccessary on a forum where IMO the topic of interest is the thread topic.

Thread winner. Remember paladin threads? We haven't had one for ages thanks to 4e giving us something else to argue about.

What's this?! I can't believe WotC is going to print the books on stone! The weight of just the three core rulebooks will be insane! This is just another way WotC is trying to force people to sign up for the D&D Insider so they don't have to lug hundreds of pounds of stone books to each game. :p

I agree that some people need to take a deep breath on occasion, but speculation and rumors are all we've got right now. If that bothers some people, they probably ought to stay away from the 4e forum until at least January when the preview books come out.

Hint: Extreme views on either end of the spectrum do not a point make.

... and then go to this thread and share what you think is the best OotS comic and then get snide about other people not thinking yours is the best. ;) Things have just gotten way to serious lately. Let Belkar and Elan memories help to calm the mood.
