Speculation -- next Friday's PH3 Playtest?

No, not really.
See the "NPC" Kobold. This kobold looses its Darkvision and the only reason for that is because Darkvision is not allowed for PC races. Would that writeup only be for NPCs Drakvision would have stayed.

Hey, I was just trying to summarize the actual text. Did I do that incorrectly?

In general, these traits and powers are provided to help Dungeon Masters create nonplayer characters (NPCs). This information can also be used as guidelines for creating player character (PC) versions of these creatures, within reason. Note that these traits and powers are more in line with monster powers than with player character powers.
A player should only use one of the following races to create a character with the permission of the Dungeon Master. The DM should carefully consider which monster races, if any, to allow as PCs in his or her campaign.

[emphasis scattered meaninglessly about, silver-age-comic-book-like, by me]

In light of the Ecology of the Deva article and the dichotomous role Devas and Rakshasas play, I think the PHB3 playtest race will be the Rakshasas (or I hope, anyway). They fit with shadow power source nicely, seem aesthetically desirable to play (catfolk, unclean spirit, decadent mastermind, dark deva), relate directly to an existing player race, and are a long-time staple of D&D.

This intrigues me, although the whole needless symmetry come to mind.

I wouldn't mind Necropolitians, but part of that is the fact that I'm holding out for Ravenloft as the 2010 setting. The intelligent dead would be needed for Necropolis. But I don't have access to DDI, so I'll wait to hear from you gents and ladies what we get.

Well, the monk seems to be in PHB3, so that probably means at least one power source in it will be ki.

So perhaps an oriental race? Hengeyokai, or a monkey people?

The monkey king is cool, so that'd be nice.

Augh, moar elves!

Thousands of them! Dozens of varieties! An elf for everything! High elves! Aquatic elves! Mud elves! Rock elves! Snow elves! Fire elves! Purple elves! Small slightly oily puddle elves! Keebler elves! Stamp elves! Townshend elves! Sugar elves! Tea elves! (Obligatory semi-obscure reference, whee)

Yesss. The children of Corellon will defeat all the other inferior races by coming in so many bizzare random subraces that the puny other races will simply give up in despair. Mwahahahaha.

(Yeah the Seldarine must be really bored, going off the number of elven subraces D&D has had)

Well, at least they don't seem to be as sexually frustrated as dragons evidently were in 3.x.

Well, when you're male, female, both and neither all at the same time and have Hanali Celanil, the elven goddess of love and beauty, as the village wheel and don't mind getting it on with your other 'brothers' and 'sisters'...

Now I really want to see a campaign where Elves are swarming and trying to enforce Elvishness and the other races are fighting back.
