D&D 5E Speculation Thread: the "Wonderful, Scary, Terrifying" book being announced this month

Ravenloft has been retconned into the Shadowfell, right? I'm still guessing that this a Shadowfell adventure, in the same way that the Witchlight thing is a Feywild adventure. I can't imagine the Far Realm working, since it's supposed to be so alien that no one can describe it or exist there.

It depends on what you find scary. I've never found cosmic horror scary. Ants aren't afraid of humans.
Whilst that is a very sanguine view, the realization that one is the ant is still pretty difficult for many people and the cosmic sizes and spans of time have their own special horror for I think most people even today, and even if it's not scary in the way some stuff is. Honestly I don't think any form of horror works on everyone. I love gothic horror's vibe but I find it completely in-scary, even a bit funny, and the more gothic it gets the funnier it gets. Whereas body horror can be so bad I can't handle it. And jump scare stuff is often more annoying than scary. But some slasher movies work for me, and ghost stuff often does (despite being a non believer basically). So I guess I'm saying we can't expect any genre to work for everyone.

Maybe a sourcebook/adventure set in the plane-spanning Illithid Empire before the Gith uprising? Or perhaps set in the Court of the Githyanki Lich Queen Vlaakith.
An Empire of the Spider Throne adventure during the rule of Vecna and Kas would be fun as well.

would "The blinding night, the hell space where our science and reason failed."work?

The Far Realm is so alien that you go insane if you see it. If it's reduced to 'just' a scary adventure site, the entire concept is pretty much defenestrated. Even in 4e when they wanted to make every plane into an explorable zone they didn't touch the Far Realm in order to keep the fundamental premise of the place intact.

perhaps a area tainted with it then?
