Speedbumps cost 50k gold

Yep. From the economy article, when going over the course of 25th level, the party should earn over a million GP. 50K is really chump change at that point.

D&D is always going to have bling. Therefore, the default rules are going to have to take into account that bling. People who want a less bling-heavy campaign (like me) have to work around that.
Correct.

Luckily 4E's equipment rules make it pretty easy to play a low-wealth campaign. Since they're balanced by their + (not their price) you can set the rewards and prices levels wherever you want. The price listed in the PHB is somewhat arbitrary.

One of the things I'm going to have to do when I get my books is work out the progression based on level. Then instead of charging PCs a cost based on tier, I'll charge it based on their level itself. So you won't go from "raise dead is cheap" at level 20, to "dear god where could I possibly get that kind of money!" at level 21.

I recall a preview from months back which stated that heroic characters couldn't be resurrected, paragon characters could be brought back only at great cost, and that for epic characters, death was a speed bump.

With a level 8 ritual, apparently this has changed?

Drammattex- it didn't exactly say that. It said that the typical situation was that, if your heroic character died, you'd need to roll up a new character.

I think I'll go my usual way and have Raise Dead be a ritual that is lost in myth and stories about zombies and such and have all major religions denounce it as a sin against the natural order of things...

I never liked easy rezzing. Having an ability to fight on as a ghost when you die is fine in a sort of mind over matter way, but true resurrection was just plain annoying...

So my players might be able to get a Raise Dead scroll somewhere, but it will have some serious in-game repercussions if they really want to do that...

Most of heroic falls below level 8.... ?

Thats only if you add the ritual yourself to your spellbook. 5th level characters should start getting access to 8th level items. that puts 50% of Heroic with availability.
