Spell Casting PrCs Spell Progression

I think the best spellcasting PrCs are the ones that...

  • Have +1 Caster Level at all levels (Loremaster)

    Votes: 7 36.8%
  • Have +1 Caster level at alternating levels (Spellsword)

    Votes: 2 10.5%
  • Have +1 Caster Level in Batches or odd patterns (Mindbender)

    Votes: 7 36.8%
  • Grant "bonus" spells that increase number of spells/day (Dragon Disciple)

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • Have their own spell progression and list (Assassin)

    Votes: 1 5.3%
  • I don't like any of the current methods much

Just out of curiosity, I wonder what is the preferred method of handling spellcasting PrCs...

I realize each has its own quirks to balance against class abilities, but in general, is there a progression you gravitate to or avoid like the plague?

I voted for alternating levels with the premise that there are other abilities granted on the levels where spellcaster level is not increased.

It depends on the focus of the class, prereques, other special abilities given, hit die, saves, skills and saves...

In other words... whichever fits the class best.

I think the alternating is a little harsh, but I'd prefer that most of the Prestige Classes that grant full caster progression didn't.

In some cases, the restrictions can justify it - giving up a school, for example - but for the most part, full progression classes give Nifty Powerz with little drawback.

Except familiar advancement.

Giving up 2-4 caster levels over a 10-level PrC means that a sorcerer or wizard has a reason to straight-class to 20.

I think the best spellcasting PrCs are those that match the spellcasting progression with the granted powers & special abilities of the PrC.

IMHO it's silly to compare the Loremaster's spell progression to that of the Spellsword without also comparing the difference in their class abilities.
