Spell: Crying Soul

A friend of mine would like to know what you think of this spell. I personally think it should be level 5 or 6, and clerics should have access to it. What do you think?

Crying Soul.

Level: Sor/Wiz 7

Components: V , S

Casting time: 2 round

Range: Close (25ft + 5 ft./2 levels)

Target: One Living Creature

Duration: Instantaneous

Saving throw: Fortitude negates

Spell resistance: Yes

Description:

When this spell is cast on the creature they are entitled to a Fortitude saving throw to negate the attack. If they fail there saving throw they may never be resurrected again.

Look at soul bind in the PHB. It is 9th level, requires an exhorbatantly expensive component, and can be reversed (although it could be tough with the gem hidden.) Compare to this. NO, insanely overpowered.

Several ways to power down this spell so it would work.
1. It destroys the body upon death to the point where raise dead dosn't work. When cast on a living person it may be dispeled before it takes effect.
2. Every time a raise dead/resurection/etc spell is cast upon them, they must make a will save or be unable to return. Again dispelable.
3. The caster must succed at a caster level check against you or the spell dosn't work. Again dispellable before death.

Any of these would be okay for a seventh level spell.

I'll place my support behind this suggestion. I think that would make a very interesting and creative spell. This does seem to be more of a Cleric spell, especially the Death Domain.

Crying Soul.

Necromancy (death)

Level: Clr 9. Sor/Wiz 9

Components: V , S, XP

Casting time: 1 hour

Range: Close (25ft + 5 ft./2 levels)

Target: One Living Creature

Duration: Instantaneous

Saving throw: Will negates

Spell resistance: Yes

Description:

When this spell is cast on the creature they are entitled to a will saving throw to negate the attack. If they fail there saving throw they may never be resurrected again.

This spell is dispellable while the creature is alive. Once the creature dies it cannot be dispelled, however.

XP Cost: 2,500

Ironically, you have made the spell move from too strong to too weak.

Compared with Trap the Soul or Soul Bind, the latest incarnation of the spell is very weak.

It's very long casting time makes it useless as a combat spell, and the fact that it can be dispelled makes it (usually) worse than Soul Bind or Trap the Soul (where the gem has to be recaptured). Furthermore, the XP cost is relatively more than the material component cost (assuming 1 XP=25 GP, as per item creation rules).

Whilst there still is some utility: the villain who captures the opponent, casts this spell and then kills him, it is probably too weak at the given level (especially as Trap the Soul is 8th). Rather than shift down the level, consider dropping the XP cost, reducing the casting time or making the spell harder to get rid off (e.g. Limited Wish or better rather than mere Dispel).

Crying Soul.

Level: Sor/Wiz 7, Clr 7

Components: V , S

Casting time: 2 round

Range: Close (25ft + 5 ft./2 levels)

Target: One Living Creature

Duration: Instantaneous

Saving throw: Fortitude negates

Spell resistance: Yes

Description:

When this spell is cast on the creature they are entitled to a Fortitude saving throw to negate the attack. If they fail there saving throw when the targeted creature dies they may only be revived by the spell Resurrection for a cost of 2 levels or 2 Constitution points.

Well, how about this:

Crying Soul.

Necromancy (death)

Level: Clr 9. Sor/Wiz 9

Components: V , S, XP

Casting time: full-round action

Range: Close (25ft + 5 ft./2 levels)

Target: One Living Creature

Duration: Instantaneous

Saving throw: Will negates

Spell resistance: Yes

Description:

When this spell is cast on the creature they are entitled to a will saving throw to negate the attack. If they fail there saving throw they may never be resurrected again.

This spell is dispellable while the creature is alive, but only by a wish, limited wish, or lost soul spell (all it does is counter this spell). Once the creature dies it cannot be dispelled, however.

XP Cost: 1,000
