Interesting.
If all that differentiates classes are their talents, feats, class skills and their flat bonuses to Defenses and BAB, it's gonna be simple to come up with a classless game.
It also implies that roles and power sources are pure subjective terms, maybe...
I like it!
True, that sounds pretty good. A gearhead's dream. I wonder if that's not only a by-product of 4E, but the core of 4E. Perhaps this time it's really a toolset (as d20 was partially intended to be) with added fantasy flavour - meaning that it's just the fleshed out version of a generic, mix-and-match game system that is at the bottom of 4E - which means that 4E might be more transferable to other genres than 3E.

Cheers, LT.

This is some of the tastiest news released yet, and it was just a paragraph or two that didn't give much away. It DID show how modular the game seems to be, reassured people in regards to the Ranger, and revealed that people who enjoy low-magic campaigns will have an easy time of it.

I just find it funny that this is from a random message board post and not an interview or design article, lol. This kind of hint/tidbit is what people want to see. More good was done with this one post than the last month worth of articles together, I imagine. :)

Most ppl, including me, want spellless rangers...AND PALADINS. :(

Anyhow, I hope its not too customizable, since then it begets the question: WHy have classes in the first place....just so they could balance/playtest the game easier?

I agree, and the quick answer is that it's easier to write a stream-of-conscious message board post than it is to write a proper article using formal language that has to be approved by your superior (and perhaps even commissioned by said superiors) before being handed over to the editors, who then hand it over to the techie guys who put it on the website, etc etc.

I definitely agree that an article on the customizability of the 4e core rules would've been much better than an updated R&C excerpt on halflings, though ...

I know what you mean...
Unlimited possibilities and easy tweaking!

Give me my restrictive, straight-jacketing classes that explicitly define my role in the party based purely on my class. What's with all of these choices and customizations?

My hat of d4E no limit!

Heh! Just kidding.

It sounds like a dream . . . nearly everything I hear about 4E makes me look forward to it more and more. I haven't played in a sustained D&D game for about two years. The last two longish campaigns died of complexity around level 13 (I was a player and the DM had FAR more patience than I have) and 9 (when I was DMing and couldn't stand the necessary prep time).

In an outrageous fit of optimism I have preordered the three core rule books from Amazon and hope to be playing a 4E campaign by the end of June. I hope to be able to report on 4 - 6 sucessful sessions of said campaign by GenCon. I am a total glutton for punishment.
