Spell Storing weapons

you can't get around the fact that low-level targeted spells just aren't that helpful in a high level game.

The buffs I outlined above (and many more) are actually very useful at higher levels. But my point was that at medium levels, being able to have them cast at a higher caster level than your own would be a particular advantage.

I don't see any rules specifically allowing you to use a wand or scroll to put a spell into a Spell Storing weapon

"Activating a scroll spell is subject to disruption just as casting a normally prepared spell would be. Using a scroll is like casting a spell for purposes of arcane spell failure chance."
and
"A spell successfully activated from a scroll works exactly like a spell prepared and cast the normal way. "

and the weapon description says:
"Once the spell has been cast from the weapon, a spellcaster can cast any other targeted spell of up to 3rd level into it. "

Even under the strictest interpretations, a spell from a scroll or wand is still considered "cast".

It might get out of hand, but there are definite drawbacks. You can only use low-level targeted spells and you must inflict damage in order to cast each spell.

One of my favourite items in 1E Oriental Adventures was the 'Mallet of Luck'.

It bestowed some nifty bonuses on a character, but to activate them, you had to whack them with the mallet...

But it's not called "casting a spell" -- it's called activating. The difference in nomenclature might make a difference here.

As you say, the Spell Storing ability says "a spellcaster can cast any other targeted spell of up to 3rd level into it. " But is it the spellcaster or the scroll/wand that "casts" the spell?

This is actually an area of the rules where reasonable people read the rules differently. For example, can a druid/paladin/wizard use the Share Spells ability to share a spell from a scroll or wand with his animal companion/mount/familiar?

Personally, I feel that one can indeed use a scroll or wand to cast a spell into a Spell Storing weapon, and I also feel that a druid/paladin/wizard can indeed use the Share Spells ability to share a spell from a scroll or wand with his animal companion/mount/familiar. But I know there are seemly reasonable people who play the game differently.

What counts as a targeted spell here? Can I put, say, Fireball into a spell-storing weapon? (If I am immune to fire, I may not care).

The spell should have "target" in the aiming line of it's write-up.

No. It is an "Area" spell. "Ray" spells could similarly not work.

It is madness. If it's the scroll that casts the spell, what is the effect of a scroll of False Life? If it's the wand that casts the spell, do you have to touch someone with a wand of Shocking Grasp? If you use a wand of Charm Person, does the subject really, really like you or your wand?
