Some spells allow, some don't. See if it allows it to be cast on an attended object. An attended object is anything someone is holding/wearing/etc. Attended objects have better saving throws, see the PHB for more info.

The spell I'm thinking of is 'Darkness'. It doesn't say one way or another about attended objects.

I wanted to have a Sor. cast Darkness on his Bat familiar's collar then use the Bat to deliver a 'Darkness' spell onto my opponent's equipment.

By the way since I am the DM, I intend to use this manouver to 'Darkness' the whole party and then sit back and send in the Bat with 'Shocking Grasp' and 'Chill Touch'
