Spellbooks

Nebuchadnezzar

Say the wizard is scorched by a powerful fireball, what happens to his spellbook?

I ask because in reading Magic of Faerun I came across the section on spellbooks, protecting it, trapping it etc. Then I suddenly realized that in our campaign we treat a spellbook as though it is either:

1) Non-existent in the heat of battle
2) Invulnerable

How do you treat spellbooks in your campaign?

We basically ignore them - just as we are ignoring any fragile magic item. Frankly, rolling item saving throws for each and every magic item you have on you would be too much of a hassle...

Though if you are captured, and the enemies strip you of your belongings, your spellbook is gone as well.

Though some additional precautions can never hurt. You never know when some thief tries to steal it...

I don't care about magic items, unless you roll a 1 on your save. Then one of your items might get toasted, and it might be the spellbook. Not many chances, though.

Item Saving Throws

I don't have my books in front of me, so I can't quote page numbers, but...

I seem to remember that the official word on item saving throws is that they only need to be made if the item is specifically targeted, OR if the item is in the possession of someone who rolled a 1 on his/her save against an area-effect spell.
