Spellcasting: Decreasing sleep time to recover Spells?

I find it funny that in the Temple of Elemental Evil video game, you can cast all your spells, rest 8 hours, and do it again. Perfect example of literal reading of the rules going against common sense. :)

yeah many comp games do that too.
my interpitation was always that you get spells per day and require rest before you can memorize them so a ring of sustenance will give you the rest you need in 2 hours but you cant exceed your spells per day using it. bear in mind though this is just MHO anf hyp has the "pure" rules interpitation.

But then again so could the clerics, IIRC - so it is more insidious than merely reading part of the text literally.

But if you go the spell point route, you could say that every hour the wizard gets back 1/24th of his spell points. Say he has 50 points total, uses 20, then in about 10 hours, he would get them back. If in 3 hours from the initial combat that left him at 30 he needs to use another spell, he would have 36 to use. It just requires the DM to say, "ok X hours have occurred since you cast your last spell, so you get Y points back."

Unearthed Arcana also has some rules for recharging without using a spell point system.

Check out the link in my signature if you're looking for a spell point system.

One hour, but you can only use it once every 48 hours.

Ring of Sustenance gives the benefit of eight hours' sleep.

Elven trance gives the benefit of eight hours' sleep.

Elven trance does not permit one to prepare spells; you still require eight hours' of restful calm.

Thus we can see that preparing spells is not one of the benefits of eight hours' sleep, and is not conferred by the two hours with the ring; another six hours of restful calm are required.

I recently had a player quit because of this. She came for 2-3 sessions, got cranky when I said she couldn't prep spells after 2 hours and then just stopped showing up.

Never played NWN2, I assume... you only need to rest for *15 seconds* for a spell caster to get their daily allotment of spells back.
