Spelljammer dreams and stranger things...

I have been thinking (a dangerouse pastime) about the way in which we have been aproaching creature conversion and Player character races for the setting. If Spelljammer is a d20 setting and not a D&D setting (peas and carrots I know, but bear with me) we should approach it as such.
In the Star Wars (and in The Wheel of Time) setting/game layout sentient races that are not completely one sided (as in shadowspawn for WOT) have PC or NPC character classes rather than monster progression such as Aberration, Monstrouse Humanoid and the like. And thus they can more easily be broken down to be used as PC's without worrying about Hit Points (which seems to be the biggest obstacle to use as PC's).
In a Star Wars, or other d20 setting the average adult Ogre would probably be a level four Warrior (or thug), but could very easily be a level one Soldier. I like this style rather than worrying about the whole Monster hit dice thing, but rather give them a career from which we can base their outlook etc. ECL experience point penalties could/would still be in effect, but not quite so high.
One of the things that I liked the most about Spelljammer was its fascinating rangeof races, most of which were potential PC races. But as the present D&D setting stands, this is now seriously hindered. I say rather than worry about the published conversion policy we work out one more fitting to a d20 and not a D&D setting. Spelljammer IS a d20 and not a D&D setting now, so we should feel free to adapt the old favorites accordingly.

Waddaya think???
