Level Up (A5E) Spelljammer

I got level up and was very impressed with it, but gaming went back to pathfinder. And I love SF so I was really looking forward to voidrunner's codex, but it is bit hard to justify buying a book for a system we are not playing. Then the Spelljammer announcement today. And Spelljammer was our favorite published setting of all time. But I would want to run it with LU. Well.... now Voidrunner's codex just shot to the top of "to buy" along with Spelljammer. Use it for setting and Level Up with some bits from VRC to add in (like journey rules in space or whatnot).

I am a happy camper today, but my wallet whimpered a little.

Just to make it 100% clear, though:

The Voidrunner's Codex is pure Sci-Fi material. There's no magic or Science-Fantasy in it. But there's also no -setting- tied to it. It's all Rules and Systems for this explicit reason.

So you can combine it with the Adventurer's Guide and have Science-Fantasy Spelljammer shenanigans without it being only Spelljammy. Or you can run it straight-faced and do Star Trek style settings, or hard-scifi settings, or a kind of d20 modernish type setting if you like. You want Bladerunner? Voidrunner's Codex has everything you need. But you can also Star Wars and Spelljam by sprinkling in that mysticism and magic to different levels.

Heck. Part of the reason it's named "Voidrunner's Codex" is 'cause we were playing on Spelljammer and Starfinder for naming conventions.

I see why you make the clarification, and I agree Voidrunners is for pure Science Fiction.

I've played with crossed system/setting for decades (I play HERO and I've playing in almost every genre in my own setting, Cypher same, merged Rolemaster and Spacemaster for a science fantasy game... So doing this would be old hat for me. I was just planning on lifting Voidrunner's rules that fit a ships in space fantasy game.

The other idea was to pull out all my old Dragonstar books for setting.

Yes I like Science Fantasy gaming.

That's what it's designed for. It'll work perfectly, Mhoram, because all the classes and systems are designed on the same basis as A5e. Same sort of balance metrics and stuff!

All the monsters from the VRC could be pitted against a party of pirates on a seafaring campaign (like the Star Crossed Seaways we'll be seeing next Tuesday!) and it would work just like they're monsters, aliens, or whatever you want to present them as!

Picking that boat up and dropping it into Wildspace will just make it even cooler!

I'm really iffy about every product WotC puts out. They tend to handwave mechanics and focus entirely on fluff & player options. A5e on the other hand is much more mechanically sound and does a far better job giving GM's quality tools to use, so I expect nothing less from VRC.

So A5e's Voidrunner mechanics + 5e's Spelljammer fluff & player options should be a match made in heaven. :)
