SpellJammer

Loved and continue to love Spelljammer with a passion... bought it soon as it came out over here all those years ago and instnatly incorporated it into my Realms games. Even to this day spelljamming vessels and creatures (such as Bionoids, Giff, Hadozee, Neogi and the like) continue to make appearances.

In my humble opinion Spelljammer was one the most original and creative things ever to come out the doors of TSR, though Space and Fantasy together in a non ni tech setting was never going to be anything else but hit or miss controversial.

There is a better chance of Monte Cook dancing the hoochie coo on top of a flag pole than there is of there ever being another Spelljammer product. It was probably TSR's least successful D&D setting.

I loved spelljammer (and darksun)...

i mean... giant hampsters... with rules about how they can stuff gnomes in their cheek pouches? priceless :D

I love so many spelljammer features. While I have never ran a full SJ campaign, at least 4 of my campaigns over the years have used jammers, as in space flying ships and sometimes with extended missions in space.

Jammers, in my world require a 5th level Wizard, Cleric or Psion to power, but then it will only fly a few feet above the surface of the ground. A 9th level spellcaster is required to fly into "space"...

If anything, JDowling, you pinpointed EXACTLY why I couldn't get into Spelljammer. My first read-through of Spelljammer stuff after coming back to D&D (I skipped 2e completely) included the Hamster, Giant Space.

I mean, seriously...

Hamster, Giant Space.

Hamster, Giant Space.

Wow. I just got that Baldur's Gate joke now.

HAHAHAHA! FRENCH CLASS!!!

PS: I have always been fascinated by SJ. But then, I don't have the creativity necessary to successfully run a "plain vanilla" fantasy setting.

but but but Giant Space Hampster breeding was a very serious and heated part of space gnome society! they had contests to see which gnomes could breed the best or more different ones... miniature giant space hampsters! :D

all sillyness aside - I know where you're coming from, SpellJammer had a lot of rediclous things.

Then again, those rediclous things I really liked and not everything in the setting was totally rediclous. to each their own, I miss my SJ and Darksun though, and not fond of other peoples conversions.

I might do my own converts but I don't even think any of my gaming group would be interested, such is life :)

Love Spelljammer! I know it'll never come back (that Spider Moon thing isn't even a worthwhile substitute), but it was good while it lasted, and the products remain great even today.

If it was relaunched, it'd probably look different though. As a setting that was a natural highway between existing campaign worlds, it made classic mistakes, and I think the lessons from those mistakes were taken and applied to Planescape, which is why the latter did so much better.

Another SpellJammer lover here. I ran a campaign for two years. They'd finally made it to the Spelljammer itself when it all fizzled. Good times. :)
