What we would want is feats, skills, new magic items and maybe a few prestige classes for flavor. Rules for fire-arms updated....

Rules for ship-to-ship combat should already exist in some form (for ocean-going vessels). Given spelljammers take on space, space combat is the same.

I mean really people - if you want spelljammer, it's all already done.
Given the treatment other settings get nowadays (campaign-specific feats, etc) and the fact that spelljamming ship-to-ship combat is on a 3D plane - I'd say that you have no idea what you're talking about.

Although there is a significant difference between vessels fighting at sea as opposed to fighting in space... the 3-D effect. ;)
Heh. You have just graduated from roleplayer to wargamer. Welcome to the club.

The last time I played a space game that is three-dimensional was the older version of Spacemaster by ICE.

But honestly, you'd cut your SJ audience to a few if you decided to add height (z-axis) to a two-dimensional battlemap.

Yeah, because if there's one thing that's essential to a setting which existed under the 2e rules, it's feats. I mean, it's not like they were originally absent.

And that nifty new 3d battlemat I've got works oh so well.

Well, many settings had abilities originally granted by proficiencies that would be considered feats today. I know Spelljammer had things like "ship weapons training" and "Spelljammer piloting", for example. They also had kits, which I prefer to do in 3e by taking appropriate feat choices (rather than PrCs), but then the appropriate feat choices have to exist in the first place.

Spacemaster was a role-playing ame, wasn't it? I saddens be to see people here accusing D&D players of being wargamers. Get ebough of that over at RPG.net.

The third dimension could be optional as it was with the original Spelljammer.

It is. So's FASA's Star Trek RPG. MechWarrior RPG have rules to integrate with BattleTech boardgames.

Heh. It's laughable when they try to deny the root of roleplaying that began with wargames. That's like telling a Scot to accept that he's British. (Don't blame me if your nose is bloodied after the fact.) :]

It could. It's best to present the rules as basic, so you don't overwhelm newbies with the "kitchen sink included" approach. I should know, I played Star Fleet Battles.
