How are these given?? I had an old DM give a cleric spells that his "God" let him cast... but it doesnt say anywere in the PHB or DMG. What do people usually do?

I know a wizard gets 2 spells per lvl, and also can scribe them into his SB, but what about the other arcane casters as well?

It's all explained in the PHB. Clerics and Druids, as well as Paladins and Rangers know all spells from the list. Wizards gain 2 spells per level, which they can choose from among those they can potentially cast. Sorcerers and Bards have a table with their Spells Known detailed.

A cleric can prepare any cleric spell. A druid can prepare any druid spell. Ditto rangers and paladins. Bards and sorcerers chose their "spells known" from the bard and sorcerer spell lists. Wizards automatically learn 2 spells per level, plus any other spells they pay to scribe into their spellbooks (the spells must be on the sorcerer/wizard spell list).

Do you mean: "Who selects the spells the cleric prepares for the day: the player, or the DM?"

If that's your question, then the answer is: The player, silly! :D

No.. i had a DM who gave the "new spells" to the cleric by saying his god gave him it. I was wondering if ne1 did the same, or if the divine used all spells, and arcane as stated in the PHB

Well, I generally play the way the PHB states, but I am a bit uncomfortable with clerics and druids trawling through massive amounts of source books looking for spells. I usually restrict them to PHB and Spell Compandium spells. Otherwise they get to pick freely. Though there are alignment restrictions, too, of course.

in 3.x, clerics can pray for and cast any spells they want. By the RAW, the player selects those spells. Having a Dm that picks the spells you get when you pray for spells is a sure way for me to go find a different DM. I hate micromanagers at work, and I hate micromanager DM's.

I was starting a whole post about possible houserules that would be acceptable to me, then realised this was the Rules forum....

According to the RAW, the cleric can choose which spells to select each day.

The DM may, of course, decide that certain spells are not available in his campaign, but then we'd be in the houserules again....

A DM who decides what spells you receive when praying for spells is running your character for you. Before you know, he might be running all the actions of all the characters, and can play D&D by himself. Which is, to my knowledge, not how D&D is supposed to be played. (But then again, as discussed earlier, there is no 'correct' way to play D&D...)
