Spellsword

First Post
I need some help designing a low level character who will take this prestige class (i.e. the path, feats, and spells he should take given his ability scores and starting level)

The character will start at 3rd level and has the following ability scores: 11,11,9,15,14,18

Thanks for all your help in advance!

P.S. I was wondering if you can have a familiar of medium size...I was thinking like an attack dog or something instead of a tiny creature...

Well...

You need at least 3rd level wizard to meet the 2nd level arcane casting prereq.

You also need at least 3rd level fighter for the BAB. Though I'd consider 3 levels of Monte's Ranger for flavour.

Stats: Wood Elf
16 Str
17 Dex
9 Con
16 Int
9 Wis
9 Chr

And be a bowman instead of a swordsman.

Er. You need one level of fighter for the proficiencies, anyway. You could do Ftr2/Wiz4 to boost your spellcasting potential, and still get in at 7th level - plus you'd get 3rd level spells 2 levels earlier.

Sorcerer is also a strong possibility - since you know you're going for a specific role you can choose your spells to suit that role. Make sure you take plenty of spells that can be used with your channel spell ability, and other combat buffs.

I would go: Wiz1 (max out Spellcraft, Knowledge Arcana and most especially Concentration)
Ftr1
Wiz1 (buy your knowledge up to 6 ranks, and keep Conc maxed!)

Now you've got all your requirements except BAB, spellcasting, and the special requirement. I would fulfill the 'defeat a foe by force of arms alone' when I was fighting a group of small wussy badguys, personally. Kill a goblin with your weapon, and then unleash the magic.

BTW, Monte's Ranger would require you to spend a feat on Armor Prof (Heavy) to get into Spellsword.

Also, I don't think you can have a Size M familiar - I think the unwritten rule is it has to be 2 levels smaller than you.

Two levels? Or do you mean two size categories smaller than you?

Dammit man! I'm an Olde Skool AD&D player! Back in my day we used the word 'levels' for everything! None of this fancy-schmancy Three-Eee 'Oh we can't call it wizard lock because someone might get confused, it's arcane lock now" claptrap! We said what we meant and meant what we said! Now git my my cane and dentures.

Young whippersnapper.

drnuncheon- What about the spell selection progression? I have never played this class combination before so I am unsure about what would be good (besides the obvious: mage armor...etc).

Well... I wouldn't worry about it too much. You are a Wizard, so you can always add new spells to your spellbook. For now, pick spells that are useful to you as a novice adventurer.

Once you take the Spellsword PrC, you'll want spells that you can channel through your weapon. The only qualification being that it must specify a target... Fortunately, there are plenty of them...

Resistance, Ray of Frost, Daze, Flare, Light, Disrupt Undead, Open/Close, Arcane Mark and Read Magic are all Channelable Cantrips.

Endure Elements, Hold Portal, Protection from X, Shield, Mage Armor, True Strike, Charm Person, Magic Missile, Change Self, Nystul's Magic Aura, Nystul's Undetectable Aura, Cause Fear, Chill Touch, Ray of Enfeeblement, Animate Rope, Enlarge, Erase, Expeditious Retreat, Feather Fall, Jump, Magic Weapon, Message, Reduce, Shocking Grasp and Spider Climb are all channelable 1st-level spells. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

Of course, some of these spells will be much more useful to channel than others, but you have plenty to choose from.
