As I said it probably wasn’t the answer that you wanted but the scenes in question I don't remember that well and I'm not sure if I missed something…

I do think your summary was pretty much spot on if it makes you feel in better.

I heard on some talk show that that was in part just done for a gag. He was going to get his powers back, but he first had to get hurt a little bit for his karma. Plus, Tobey has a bad back, so the whole, "I'm BACK! I'm BA- . . . Oh, ow, my back, my back," thing was a joke.

Makes sense. The whole car alarm thing had me laughing anyway, I didn't even remember that Tobey does indeed have a bad back.

I believe that it's because he was still stressed out, even when he "accepted" his role. When MJ is taken and threatened, all doubts fade; all stress is effectively gone - only one sense of purpose - HELP HER.
