Spiked chain questions/prestige classes?

Lupo, here's a link to the Reaper website where this miniature can be found. You can order it straight from their website or find it in most good game and hobby shops that sell Reaper's stuff. Some will even order it for you if you give them the miniature number (2659 in this case).

It doesn't show it in this picture, but the other end of the chain looks about the same as the visable end which is shown.

Thanks for the continuing tips. The extra damage from sneak attacks might just make up for the rest of the drawbacks as long as I have enough fighter levels to get the needed feats! Hmmm...

Let me try and see if I can post the pic...

I ran a fighter / rogue with a spiked chain that was human and it worked quite well. The damage is the only thing that hurts it. I never finessed it since my dex was not that often much higher than my str at least not a feat worth higher.

It made a good harrassing weapon laying people down so the front line fighters could lay them out. also it is sometimes easier to flank at 10 feet than at 5. So keep that in mind. I was mostly a rogue though.

Well, suggestions so far have been good, but here's what I'm currntly loving.. and yes, my DM HATES me :D :( hehe.

Half-Dragon/Human Fighter

Using 32 point buy, buy yourself an 18 Str. :D Half-Dragons get +8 STR, then use your "ability" increases to bump Str.

At lvl 6 I was:

Half-Dragon(Gold)/Human Fighter 3
STR- 27 (+8)
Dex- 14 (+2)
Con- 16 (+3)
Int- 14 (+2)
Wis- 8 (-1)
Cha- 10 (0)

Here's the killer part, Feats:
Exotic Weapon- Spiked Chain
Expertise
Improved Trip
Knockdown
Combat Reflexes
Kick 'Em While They're Down

(Kick 'Em While They're Down is out of the swash-buckling Dragon mag, forget which one, but it allows you to make an AoO vs. anyone standing up from Prone in your threatened area. Normally standing up from Prone does NOT provoke. The requirement is printed is: Alertness, my DM ruled this didn't make any sense and made Combat Reflexes the prereq. Yours might not, but Alertness is still a good feat, and it leads to an even better one, Kick 'Em ;) )

He's a freaking Tripping MACHINE! :D And since you've got both Improved Trip, and Knockdown, it lets you make a choice. Think you have a good chance to hit them? Just do a normal hit, you'll do dmg and then KnockDown will activate. OR, do they have a really high AC that you are afriad you won't hit them? Do an Improved Trip, you just have to hit there TOUCH AC, then do the trip oppossed Str rolls :D

With the Half-Dragon STR, you win just about every-time. For the times you don't? Look into picking up the feat Prone-Attack :) Myself I picked up Improved Disarm, I'm going to build a PrC around Tripping and Disarming people :D

Like others have said though, you don't HAVE to do EVERYTHING that the spiked chain *can* do. Just plan out a route and go with that one is all. It's fun :)

If you could start higher, try an African Elephant furry/half-dragon. Mod is +20 Str, total ECl of 8 (which includes 3 HD, so you won't fall over in a stiff breeze).

You may also want to try a Tyrannosaur furry; dinosaurs are now animals, so they count for anthopomophic animals. Less total Str, but better Wis and Cha.

Oh. My. That is good. I'd forgotten about that feat.

Let me point out that the Spiked chain works out very well with 2 fighter / 7 rogue / shadow dancer the reach with combat reflexes and hide in plain sight was a nice and deadly combo.

Okay, very cool stuff so far everybody. Now I'm looking at what possible prestige clasees could work for a spiked chain weilder. I have the Master of Chains from Sword & Fist. I thought that I had seen at least one other spiked chain PrC, maybe in Dragon, but I can't find it now. Anybody know of any other prestige classes that work well with this weapon?
