spinnin deflection with a greatspear?

I was hoping to use a greatspear as my primary knight weapon for my LFR eladrin. Would I qualify for the spinning deflection class feature? I'm trying to keep AC with plate, but use a two-handed weapon and find another AC boost.

Spinning Deflection requires a staff, so the greatspear does not qualify. However, a greatspear is a polearm, so you could take the feat Hafted Defense -- that gives you a boost equal to a light shield.

It won't work in the character builder, but it makes sense rationally, especially since WotC hasn't released any knight options that use spears (or flails, light blades, clubs, maces, etc.). I'd probably allow it in my game.

In my games, I have houseruled all spears and most of the polearms to count as a staff for purposes of those class features, and have actually just flat out added the "staff" property to non-reach spears, along with some ability to throw them as heavy thrown weapons. It hasn't broken anything yet. ;)

Thanks for the advice, I'd houserule it as a DM, but this is a new LFR build, so I doubt it would fly. Hafted defense isn't optimal since I have to burn a feat, but it works. Thanks!
