'bout the only thing which would put Lex over (while sane) so as to off Lionel is finding out Lionel could have saved his mother... but did not, 'for Lex's own good'.
I say this because early on Lex has very fond memories of his mother. It seemed as if she was trying to curb some of Lionel's more 'extreme' child rearing habits.
If Lionel did let Lex's mother die (oh, so soap opera I know) Lex will be the Luthor from the comics once and forever.
EDIT: Lionel would not just let his wife die to get control ove Lex, he would have a good business reason as well... like he always does.
