Spontaneous Meta-Magic Healing

I know this has been asked a million times, but I've always ignored the thread. We've got a cleric who wants to take Maximize Spell. The question is, are there any rules that state whether he can use a 4th level spell slot, for example, to spontaneously cast a maximized cure light wounds? We're looking for some sort of rule, but can't find it.. haven't checked the FAQ yet.

Thanks!

I say yes, but I don't have any "official" source to back that up. You may substitute a spell for a cure spell of equal level, and as far as I'm concerned, metamagic applies to that. It'll be a full-round casting time, but that's the only stipulation I'd add.

Yes, that's possible...but why?

Why spend a 4th level slot to get a maximized 1d8+5 when you can simply cast cure critical wounds for 4d8+20?

Even at level 7, cure serious wounds is much better than a maximized cure light wounds. 11-39 (average 25) compared to a flat rate of 13.

That trend is the same way for any of the cure spells. Empower doesn't work as well as just going to the higher level spells does.

Edit: Forgot to mention. As with any metamagic being applied to a spontaneously cast spell, it takes a full-round action to cast. Not only is that spell less effective, it takes longer too.

Now you're just getting lazy :) It's on pg.78 of the PHB, under "Spontaneous Casting and Metamagic Feats".

The advantage is that you can spontaneously cast higher-level spells that way.

Keep in mind that clerical spontaneous casting is only cure spells- so if you want more than a cure crits you may as well empower it or something.

I say just go for the higher level spell, and forget about meta-magicing a curative spell. The math just does not work out with it.

or um, heal? why metamagic a cure spell when you have heal

You can't spontaneously cast heal, only spells with "cure" in their name. The same goes for h*rm and "inflict" spells.
