Spring Attack question

BOZ

Creature Cataloguer
got a question on the spring attack feat for the party ranger. we were fighting ettins this weekend, and the DM told him that using the spring attack caused him to have an AoO on him due to the ettin's reach. (i think this was the problem).

so here's my question, when does spring attack cause an Attack of Opportunity? or does it ever?

If you're attacking one ettin, you're fine.

If you're fighting two ettins, there can be a problem. Spring Attack only protects you from movement AoOs by the creature you are attacking. If there are two of them side-by-side, then you cross through the other's threatened area, and he gets to whack you.

But the one you're attacking doesn't.

Spring Attack prevents AoOs due to movement through threatened squares, but only AoOs from the target you are using Spring Attack against. So, in your example, if the ranger was attacking the ettin, then he should not have suffered an AoO. If he passed through areas threatened by another creature while attacking the ettin using Spring Attack, he would have drawn an AoO from the other creature as normal.

i think he might have been passing through the threatened areas of two ettins. but yes, i'll print this thread out and show it to him like he asked. thanks. :)

Code:
[color=white]
---------
[color=yellow].[color=orange].[/color].[/color]....
|[color=yellow]H[/color][color=orange]..[/color]..@.+####
[color=red]H[/color][color=orange]..[/color]....
[color=red].[color=orange].[/color].[/color]....
[color=red]..[/color].....
---------
[/color]

The yellow areas are threatened by the yellow ettin.

The red areas are threatened by the red ettin.

The orange areas are threatened by both.

If the ranger Spring Attacks the yellow ettin, he is safe from AoOs by the yellow ettin... but if he passes through an orange or red space, he provokes an AoO from the red ettin.

This is why he should have ranks in Tumble :)
