[spycraft] Agency names

"The Agency"

I like the sterile and ambiguous nature of the title. It gives the mystique and officialness without being hokey or instantly indentifiable. That comes in handy during interrogation or deniability

-Who do you work for?
-The Agency
-Which agency.
-THE Agency.

No amount of sodium pentathol or torture is going to force out a direct name or answer....ever. :)

This name has the advantage of being vague enough for me to keep the actual goals of the organisation very secret, even from the players (bwa-hahahah)
Im using 'the Agency' in my game for the same reasons.
I say, the more nebulous - the better.

yeah and I like the Agency too

Couple of my personal favorites:

AEGIS: Agency for Emergency Global Intelligence & Security

MEDUSA: Military Espionage Division, United States Army

Of course, having watched every episode of ALIAS this season, I'm finding myself really leaning more towards meaningless letter-and-number agency names: sd-6, k-directorate, etc.

Was it just me or wasn't there some sort of java bot online that made words out of letters for you?

Example:

Put in the words R I E N and it spitted out NIRE ERIN etc. Might be helpful to make better words.

GMSkarka, nice ones ;) I must yoink them.

I'm also using Foundation (Alpha Foundation) but more in the Asimov than Knight Rider vein.

I also name the divisions in it (not the same as departments)
examples...
R&D = Vulcan Division
Military Ops = Omega division
Intel (PC's division) = Proteus Division

I tried to come up with some good acronyms, but they all ended up sounding too cheesy. My campaign, I have decided, will be loosely based on the TV show the Avengers, and perhaps a bit of the Prisoner. So, just ended up calling my agency The Ministry.

I was just thinking how nice it would be if I still had my Top Secret rules, I seem to remeber a pretty handy dictonary of acronyms and espionge related organizations. IIRC, they also had a dictonary of related espionage terms.
